From a small co-op of 21 growers based in Villedommange, just south of Reims. The Brut Instinct 1er Cru is 55% Meunier, 30% Pinot Noir & 15% Chardonnay. We love it for its soft mousse, great depth of flavour, good length and ability to drink everyday. Brilliant Premier Cru champagne. “Very pretty nose with mouth-filling fruit and delicate mousse. Champagne Delavenne – Bouzy

For 4 generations the Delavenne family has been producing distinctive Champagne cuvées from their 9 hectare estate of Grand Cru vineyards in the villages of Bouzy, Cramant and Ambonnay. Low sulphur, no fining, no herbicides or chemical fertilisers and all hand harvested grapes ensure every effort is made to retain the pure expression of the terroir. All fermentations take place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks as it is felt that barrels would detract from the transparency of the terroir. None of the wines are put through malolactic fermentation, maintaining an exceptionally bright, fresh and clean, knife-edge acidity. All cuvées are aged a minimum of three years in bottle.

The Brut Tradition is the embodiment of the Delavenne house tradition. Two consecutive years blended from vineyards in Bouzy and Ambonnay, the 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay undergo spontaneous fermentation in stainless Steel tanks with no malolactic fermentation and no fining. The dual-vintage, single-village Brut Nature is created without added sugar and is the purest expression of the Bouzy Grand Cru terroir. The mouth-filling Brut Rosé is blended from Pinot noir, Chardonnay and Bouzy Rouge (AOP Coteaux Champenois).

Regi – Ambonnay

After training as a sommelier, Christophe Regi honed his expertise working with famous Michelinstarred chefs like Alain Ducasse at the Louis XV in Monaco and Yves Thuriés at Cordes-sur-ciel. With 25 years’ experience in the world of wine and champagne, he decided to go out on his own and create his signature brand of Champagne. The origin of Christophe Regi’s grapes is paramount. They come from Ambonnay, Aÿ, Bouzy on the Montagne de Reims and Avize, Cramant, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-oger in the Côte des Blancs. The extended sur lie aging process of five years minimum for the Brut and seven years for the Ultra Brut infuses them with a range of exceptional aromas – white flowers, stone fruits and toasted hues – making Regi Champagnes wines of character.

The Brut Grand Cru NV shows an intense bouquet of delicate stone fruits, quince and toffee apples. The perfectly designed palate balances fresh citrus fruits with the exquisite full-bodied taste that only full Grand Cru terroirs can provide. With its dried fruit, candied ginger, orange zest and grapefruit, this Champagne gradually reveals a beautifully complex aroma. Pin-point partitioning, enhanced by fine silky bubbles — a product of the extended sur lie ageing process lasting five years. 81% Pinot Noir 19% Chardonnay 2013 crop base of with 30% Reserve Wines. Dosage 8 g/L The Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru NV offers a delicate bouquet, revealing a fragrance of white flowers, frangipani and orange blossom. Characterised by a light, upfront palate with notes of fresh orange pulp, lemon meringue and bergamot, it has a simultaneously creamy and ardent texture typical of the great Cote Blanche Chardonnays. 100% Chardonnay with 35% Reserve Wines. Dosage : 8 g/L The Brut Grand Cru Rosé NV is delicate and salmon-pink in colour with a fine foam which lingers on the tongue, the softness of small red and black berries contrast with the fresh pink grapefruit to create a special harmony. This incredibly sharp champagne was created from an assemblage of red Pinots Noir grapes and plots identified for the delicacy of their fruits. 50% Chardonnay, 36% Pinot Noir with the addition of 14% Red Wine (PN). Single vintage base with 35% Reserve Wines. Dosage : 8 g/L The Extra Brut Grand Cru is a beautifully sculpted champagne with good depth, patient cellaring ensuring it’s extensive nuances are revealed. The blend of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay Grand Cru is based on a single vintage with 30% Reserve Wines and 4 g/l dosage.

Laherte Frères – Épernay

Laherte Frères was founded in the nineteenth century with current winemaker Aurélien representing the 7th Generation. They own nine hectares of land spread over ten communes and an astonishing seventy different parcels. Vineyards are currently farmed biodynamically or are in the process of conversion. The family holdings are mainly located around Épernay, nearby Chavot (where the winery is located), Moussy and Vaudancourt. In addition, they own parcels in the Côte des Blancs and the Marne Valley. They cultivate all three main varieties with Pinot Meunier very well represented as one would expect given the local terroir. Primary ferments are mostly in wood – small barrels and foudres – with only partial malolactic and 6 months lees aging before secondary ferment. Dosage is kept low and each wine is carefully crafted to see the varieties used best exploit the estate’s patchwork of fine terroir.

Their entry-level wine, the Brut Ultradition NV is a blend of 60% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir with 40% reserve wines (aged in barrique). The Extra Brut is composed of the same blend with dosage of 4 g/l. The 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs Ultradition NV is from the best south facing slopes of Chavot & Épernay, 50% reserve wines from barrel and dosage of 5g/l. The Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature is also 50% reserve wines, bottled without dosage and expressing wonderfully the chalk and clay soils of the Coteaux Sud Épernay. The elegant minerality of the Blancs Les Grappes Dorées comes from the chalky soil and the excellent maturity brings rich flavours and complex structure. Dosage 8.5 g/l. The Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut Nature comes from vines in Mesnil-sur-Oger and Cramant. Composed of 70% aged reserve wines it is bottled with zero dosage. The Rosé de Meunier Extra Brut is 100% Meunier – 60% vinified off the skins, 30% saignée and 10% still red wine – bottles with 2.5 g/l dosage. Les Empreintes 2012 is blend of 50% Pinot Noir from Les Chemins d’Epernay planted in 1957 and 50% Chardonnay ( 1/3 Chardonnay Muscaté) from Les Rouges Maisons, both in Chavot, planted in 1957 and 1983 respectively. Dosage is 3g/l The estate makes five single vineyard cuvées. The Les Beaudiers Rosé de Saignée is 100% Pinot Meunier from Chavot plots planted in 1953, 1958, and 1965. Macerated for 12 to 14 hours, alcoholic fermentation with natural yeast in barrel and no malolactic fermentation. Les Longues Voyes Blanc de Noir 1er Cru 2012 is 100% Pinot Noir from the limestone subsoils of the Montagne de Reims. Aged for 18 months on lees in barrel and bottled with 3.5g/l dosage. Aurélien’s other Blanc de Noirs is Les Vigne d’Autrefois. 100% Pinot Meunier from old vines on selected plots planted between 1947 and 1953 including some ungrafted vines. A small portion of interplanted Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Fromenteau (Pinot Gris) is included. The newest release is Les Grands Crayères 1er Cru Extra Brut – 100% Chardonnay from massale selection of old and new rootstock from the particular and complex Terroir of Les Coteaux Sud d’Épernay. Dosage 4g/l Les 7 comes from a vineyard planted by Thierry, Aurélien’s father in 2003 to access the blend and flavours of times gone by. All 7 Varieties – 10% Pinot Gris, 18% Chardonnay, 18% Meunier, 15% Petit Meslier, 8% Arbanne, 14% Pinot Noir and 17% Pinot Blanc are co-picked and co-fermented with no malolactic fermentation. Blending of several years, in a partial solera/perpetual reserve, 60% of wines of these years are added to 40% of reserve wines (solera 2005-2015).

Larmandier-Bernier – Vertus

Champagne Larmandier-Bernier is one of the true stars of the Côte des Blancs. Both the Larmandier and Bernier families have had a long history in the Champagne region dating back to the French revolution. Pierre took over the direction of the family estate in 1988, moving the family’s vineyards to Organics by 1992 and then to full-blown Biodynamic viticulture by 1999. All in all, the wines from Larmandier-Bernier are reference point Champagnes that fully demonstrate the profound potential of low dosage and non-dosé bottlings. These powerful wines revel in their beautiful expressions of terroir, impeccable balance and clean, zesty and very pure palate impressions.

Cuvée Latitude is 100% Chardonnay – 40% wine from their ‘perpetual’ reserve started in 2004 – all from vineyards south of Vertus, aged on the lees for over 2 years, with at least 6 months post disgorgement before release. Longitude 1er Cru comes from Chardonnay grown in Vertus, Oger, Avize & Cramant (all Grand Crus with the exception of Vertus which is 1er Cru) and benefits from a longer time on lees and up to 2 years post disgorgement. Both wines have dosage of around 4g/litre (in comparison many Brut Champagnes average around 10g/l). Located mid-slope on Vertus, the parcels of Les Barillers and Les Faucherets, provide the Chardonnay for Terre de Vertus 1er Cru. This exquisite single-vineyard, single-vintage has spent 6 years on lees and is bottled with zero dosage after initial fermentation in oak barrel and foudre. The Bourron du Levant parcel on the East-facing slopes of Cramant hill, vines aged between 48 & 75 years, receives the early morning sun and produces rich and powerful base wines, fermented 100% in oak with batonnage. After aging on the lees for a minimum of 5 years it creates the Grand Cru Vieille Vigne du Levant, bottled with 2 gr/l dosage. The newest to the range is the sculpted Les Chemins d’Avize Grand Cru, a blend of Chardonnay from the Chemin de Plivot and Chemin de Flavigny lieux-dits vinified and aged in oak barrels of various sizes and bottled with 2 gr/l dosage after 6 years on lees. 40+ Year Old Pinot Noir fruit from Vertus (and a splash of interplanted Pinot Gris, or Fromonteau as its known in Champagne ) is macerated with the skins for around 3 days for the magnificent and much lauded Rosé de Saignée 1er Cru. Fermentation is in stainless steel and around 20% concrete egg with dosage of around 3g/l.

Carinus Family Vineyards – Stellenbosch

Cousins Danie and Hugo are 5th generation growers with prime vineyards in the Swartland, Devon Valley and the very exciting Polkadraai ward in Stellenbosch. Great wine is made in the vineyards and they supply a roll-call of exceptional producers – names like Alheit Vineyards, Crystallum, Raats Family Wines, Thorne & Daughters, Mulderbosch & LeRiche to name but a few. Embodying the drive of the new generation Hugo and Danie decided not only to sell grapes and have other people make great wines from them but to make some wine too. So started Carinus Family Wines using their selection from their 100s hectares to focus on what works in each area.

There are 3 Chenin Blancs from the Swartland from a 37 year old dry-farmed Malmesbury vineyard with Red Granitic soils – the Rooidraai Chenin Blanc selection and the more immediate Carinus Chenin Blanc. The Polkadraai Chenin Blanc has a beautiful minerality to it and with a pH of 3.14 has a long furure ahead of it. The high toned, whole-bunch crunchy Syrah is from the Polkadraai property. There are more wines in the pipeline with exciting new plantings coming into production. The wines have been warmly received in their homeland – the first year (2016) with the Rooidraai Chenin Blanc getting 5 stars in the Platter guide, Carinus Chenin 4 and a half stars as an example. The innovation doesn’t stop there as they also produce a wine each year under the Danchko Luka moniker. These are made in collaboration with Lukas van Loggerenberg (recent Tim Atkins Young Winemaker of the Year) for whose solo wines they provide some fruit and with whom they also share their Devon Valley winery. The 2018 release is a Muscat de Frontignan from Danie’s sister’s property in Stellenbosch’s Polkadraai. Lukas ferments it to dry in old oak with 5 days on its skins.

Anysbos – Overberg

In 2007 Johan and Sue Heyns bought two pieces of land that would become Anysbos, inviting Marelise Niemann to make their wines.. The remains of a stone cottage became their home and the old mule shed, offices and a tasting room. They built dams and roads and planted olive trees. Twenty two thousand of them. In 2012 they planted their first dryland bush vines of Grenache Noir. Since then they have added Shiraz, Cinsault, Chenin Blanc, and more Rhône varieties: Grenache Blanc and Roussanne. Watching things grow was just a bit slow for Joburgers so they started making goat’s milk cheese. They sell their handmade cheeses to shops and restaurants in the Overberg and the offspring of their goat mothers to other breeders locally and neighbouring countries.

The Disdit 2017 is a Chenin Blanc 61%, Roussanne 21% and Grenache Blanc 18% blend fermented with natural yeasts and aged 10 months in old oak barrels. ‘Wonderfully opulent and expressive from the first pour and overflowing with aromatic notes of tangerine, sweet pineapple pastille and green apple peel. So voluptuous, generous and fleshy with superb textural balance, impressive fruit concentration and a singing blood orange and mango flesh finish! Very impressive’. Greg Sherwood MW. The Grenache 2017 has a super complex and expressive nose that is very precise, detailed and perfumed with notes of cherry confit, botanicals, vermouth spice and a striking line of blood orange and pomegranate spice. The balance and weight is super fine, concentrated and harmonious, quite discreet and feminine in its own kind of way. If this is the quality Marelise has achieved with her maiden Anysbos vintages, it makes the mind boggle at the end game potential. Really delicious!

Elgin Ridge Wines, Elgin

Having sold their successful IT business in London, Brian and Marion Smith searched wine regions to realise their dream to make outstanding, small quantity wines, eventually settling on the unique terroir of the Elgin Valley in South Africa. Certified organic and using many biodynamic practices, ploughing is done by Maddox, a gentle Percheron horse, and pest control is handled by ducks patrolling the vineyards.

The 282 Wines are named to reflect the vineyards’ altitude – 282 metres. Sauvignon Blanc is fermented and aged in tank. The Chardonnay is barrel fermented and aged in old oak. A blend of 3 clones fermented individually in stainless steel, 500 litre bins and concrete egg with a portion of carbonic and 20% of whole bunch. The 282 Pinot Noir is a blend of 3 clones fermented individually in stainless steel, 500 litre bins and concrete egg with a portion of carbonic and 20% whole bunch. Chaos White is a limited production wine bottled in 50cl, made from Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, consisting of several components: some skin contact, some whole bunch and some free run juice.
