Castello di Potentino – Seggiano, Tuscany

Nestled in a hidden valley under the imposing shadow of the Monte Amiata, lies a medieval castle. Restored by the Green family in 2000, the castle now operates not only as one of Tuscany’s most unique wineries but also a cultural centre for gastronomy, well-being, music and agrotourism. The collaboration of the Tuscan sun, mixed volcanic soils and cooling influence of the mountain have created a place of magic and calm.

This is one of the rare microclimates in Italy where Pinot Noir has been persuaded to flourish. This wine, called Piropo, bursts with notes of red currants, and dried herbs with a savoury edge and just a touch of cocoa beans. The Sacromonte, made from 100% Sangiovese, has incredible intensity, brambly fruit, garden herbs and sweet blossom. Alicante is used to make Balaxus, a dark brooding wine full of bitter orange and clove spice, pepper, dried herbs and a bright cherry finish. Lyncurio, is a unique Pinot Noir pale rosé but vinified as a white wine. Wonderfully silky, almost champagne-like, with a fresh and juicy finish. Jaspidem is the Sangiovese rosé, full bodied with spice and red apple, finishing with herbs and a blackcurrant freshness. In exceptional years Charlotte, the winemaker, curates a special ‘Winemakers Release’, specifically stored in the cellars for a later release.
