Castello di Tassarolo – Gavi, Piemonte

Castello di Tassarolo is situated in the Gavi DOCG commune that shares its name. Massimiliana is the latest in the Spinola family line that stretches back to the 8th Century and who have owned the castle since the 14th Century. Massimiliana and Henry manage their 20 hectares of vineyard along Biodynamic principles and champion the use of heavy horses (one of which is called ‘Nicotine’) to further influence their soils’ health. The wines are organic and handmade and exemplify perfectly the high standards and respectfully natural production of the estate. The whites are all single commune Gavi DOCS and, highlighting the historical importance of the estate, the Commune is named Tassarolo after their estate.

The Gavi ‘Spinola’ is the estate Gavi, the concentrated core showing fantastic breadth and aromas of lime, orange blossom, flowers and greengage. The Gavi ‘No Sulphites’ offers rounded and pure fresh fruit flavours with an intense aroma of white flowers and crushed orchard fruits. The Gavi ‘Alborina’ is a single vineyard expression, its elegant and textured fruits and amazing white flower aromas are all carried by graceful, zippy acidity. The Gavi ‘Titouan’, the estate’s top Gavi, is bottled with no sulphur added, partly in stainless steel and partly in used wood. This is intensely floral and fragrant with a core of soft fruits and warm acidity. The Rosa Spinola Monferrato Chiaretto (a rare, 100% Nebbiolo rose) is a delicate rosé colour with orange and straw highlights. Floral and crushed berry aromas lead to a rich and vibrant palate with lovely stony minerality. The Monferrato Rosso is a blend of 80% Barbera & 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Spicy and full with crunchy black fruit and great balance. All the estates red wines are made with zero sulphur.
