Adam Mason Raised by Wolves La Colline Semillon Gris (Rooi Groen Druif) 2017

13.5% abv

Vol- 75cl

“A golden orange color, this wine leads with scents of dried apricot, spiced orange, honeydew melon and a mentholated, cassis-like lift and vibrancy. There’s a stunning texture to the palate, with soft tannins and brisk, almost searing acidity that result in a vibrant experience and lingering textural interest through the close, alongside flavors of peach skin and bitter melon rind. A salty, mineral impression lingers on the finish.” Wine Enthusiast.com

After 10 days of carbonic maceration, the mostly fermented must was pressed off to neutral 500L and 228L barrels to complete fermentation. Here it matured for 9 months before racking and bottling.

The La Colline vineyard is uniquely South African in that dark skinned Semillon vines are inter-planted with light skinned Semillon. It was planted 82 yrs ago on the southern slope of Dassenberg in Franschhoek on soils of decomposed granite with quartz, and 310–350m above sea-level. In summer, the tightly-planted bushvines form a wild looking mess. Sémillon Gris is historically significant in South Africa, not just for the old vine aspect, but for its previous popularity. In the early 1800s, 80% of the vines in South Africa were thought to be Semillon. By the mid-1800s 50% of the Semillon had gone through the natural mutation and turned into Semillon Gris. This variation of the variety only happens slowly, vine per vine, after the vines are at least 30 years old. 70% of the vineyard is now Sémillon Gris, so it is hand picked to ensure that only the Gris bunches are picked.

With a lengthy, successful stint at Klein Constantia under his belt (amongst other things), Adam Mason is currently Mulderbosch's head winemaker, one of South Africa's established vinous stars. His wines are made from a selection of unique vineyards from his travels around the Cape and are produced in limited quantities, making them rare examples of the Cape’s most interesting vineyards. Small batch, experimental wines like these are at the forefront of what has transformed the Cape into one of the most dynamic regions in the world, the name parodying the constant one-upmanship of winemakers.

My wine is a single vineyard." ... "Yeah, well my wine is naturally fermented." ... "Oh yeah, well my wine is hand sorted by berry." And Adam's response: "Well my wines are all of the above, and I was raised by wolves."
The Raised by Wolves wines are all vinified with minimalistic intervention to allow the true character of the varietal and the site-specific terroir to shine through.
