Alheit Vineyards Hemelrand Vine Garden 2018

14% abv

There is also a new single vineyard release this year. Hemelrand Vine Garden is from a new ‘fifth-leaf’ vineyard planted directly behind the Hemelrand cellar and is comprised of 48% Roussanne, 27% Chenin, 22% Chardonnay and 3% Verdelho. The wine is tight and lean and currently not very expressive on either the nose or palate, but one can see the family resemblance to its peers, even though the vine age here is a fraction of that of the other wines. Production is limited at 5,000 bottles, although most has been allocated for the domestic market. It is, however, realistically priced.

The nose is a bit of a show-off. Stone fruit and white flowers abound. There are also some hints of baking spice, roast nuts and ripe apple. The palate is powerful, with flavours reflecting the nose of the wine. High natural acidity cuts and carries the richness into a long flavourful finish. This wine will definitely stand up to a rich dish, perhaps something like chicken in tarragon cream.

As one of South Africa’s newest producers, Alheit Vineyard declares its aim as being ‘to vinify extraordinary Cape vineyards’. The fact that Chris and Suzaan Alheit set out on their venture to make only white wine, is a testament to their commitment to seek out some of the oldest vineyard blocks in the country.

Using the knowledge and contacts of leading viticulturist, Rosa Kruger, within two short years, Alheit Vineyards has established itself as the most talked about winery in the Cape, with its limited releases being highly sought-after.

Winery space is rented in shed, originally conceived as an olive oil production facility, on the Hemel-en-Aarde road out of Hermanus. Probably as far away as one could expect to be from their primary grape sources on the West Coast.
