Anthonij Rupert Cape of Good Hope Van Lill & Visser Chenin Blanc 2019

13.5% abv

Vol- 75cl

Vibrant nose of nectarine, stone fruit and melon with a vague hint of flint. There’s more of the same on the palate which is taut but showing lively, fresh arpicot, peach and melon flavours. The acidity makes for a juicy mouthful. Lovely palate weight and texture. Good grip and a long, satisfying aftertaste.

Fermentation occurred spontaneously in both stainless steel (60%) and 300l French Oak barrels (11% new), with 40% of the wine undergoing malolactic fermentation. The wine spent 12 months on the lees before being blended and bottled. Basie van Lill of Arbeidsend has owned and worked these vineyards in the Citrusdal Mountains in Olifants River for decades. The vineyards share space with fynbos and Rooibos tea bushes while sheep also graze the land. These treasured old bush vines, planted without irrigation in 1983 on the well-drained sandy red soils of the Skurfberg Mountain, together with the area’s height above sea level and naturally low rainfall, produce small quantities of intense and balanced wines with a high natural acidity.

Based on the L’Ormarins estate in Franschoek the Anthonij Rupert estate is fast becoming one of the most impressive and innovative wineries in South Africa. Fruit comes from four vineyard properties in Franschoek itself, Elandskloof, Riebeeksrivier and Darling. Johan Rupert has built one of the most driven and talented teams in the industry and the result is a suitable memorial to Johan’s late brother Anthonij.
