Anthonij Rupert Optima 150cl 2019

14% abv

Vol- 150cl

Alluring spicy aromatic overlay to dark berry and plum fruit with blackcurrant leaf and hint of cracked black pepper and violet. This wine is all about texture – from its soft, velvety entry to the gentleness of the spice which pervades the cassis, back fruit, and cedar flavour. Ample turned earth and tobacco leaf notes too. Beautifully layered and harmonious with the fruit ideally supported and framed by sympathetic oak. Nothing is overplayed or dominant.

37% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc.
The carefully selected grapes for Anthonij Rupert Optima, come from our L’Ormarins Estate in Franschhoek and Rooderust farm in Darling. Specific sites, each with their own unique soil type and climatic conditions, were identified for the ideal characteristics, which form unique components of the final blend in Optima.Grapes are sorted using an optical sorting system. The wine underwent a lengthy post-fermentation maceration after being dry-skinned fermented. This guarantees good tannin structure along with deep color extraction. French oak and stainless steel tanks were used for fermentation in order to enhance complexity. In the barrel, the malolactic fermentation was finished, and then the wine was racked off the lees. Before the final blend , each component was matured separately for 20 months in 225L French oak barrels, with 30% of those barrels being first fill.

Based on the L’Ormarins estate in Franschoek the Anthonij Rupert estate is fast becoming one of the most impressive and innovative wineries in South Africa. Fruit comes from four vineyard properties in Franschoek itself, Elandskloof, Riebeeksrivier and Darling. Johan Rupert has built one of the most driven and talented teams in the industry and the result is a suitable memorial to Johan’s late brother Anthonij.
