Based on the L’Ormarins estate in Franschoek the Anthonij Rupert estate is fast becoming one of the most impressive and innovative wineries in South Africa. Fruit comes from four vineyard properties in Franschoek itself, Elandskloof, Riebeeksrivier and Darling. Johan Rupert has built one of the most driven and talented teams in the industry and the result is a suitable memorial to Johan’s late brother Anthonij.
Anthonij Rupert Protea Chardonnay 2018
14% abv
Protea range of field Anthonij Rupert is a collection of six wines which emblem is a Proteus, a species of plant native to South Africa and characteristic of the Cape Floral Kingdom, the smallest region florstique recognized in the world. The name “Proteus” comes from the name of the Greek god Proteus, due to the diversity of appearances. From the same flower, such indeed shows a surprising variation of shapes and colors. Lively aromas of Golden Delicious apple and vanilla wafer with a light floral edge. A rich, rounded mouthful, it shows similar spicy baked apple (tarte tatin) and citrus soufflé on a creamy, buttery base. The balance between fruit and acid is restrained yet lively and fresh. There’s an undertone of leesy orange marmalade adding complexity. It finishes clean and dry with a lingering citrus aftertaste.
