Artemis Karamolegos is one of the most dynamic wineries on the unique island of Santorini. Led by his grandfather, who started making wine and cultivating vines as a hobby in the 1950s, Artemis founded the winery in 2004. Local variety Assyrtiko, which has become the flag bearer for quality wine across the whole of Greece, is at the heart of the estate’s production. They own just over 3ha of vineyards (some over 100 years old) from many of the best villages to grow Assyrtiko - Pyrgos, Megalorchori, Exo Gonia, Akrotiri and Fira. Long term leases on another 5ha allows them to manage and work with an amazing range of aspects, altitudes and local varieties. Their hugely talented young winemaker Lefteris Anagnostou crafts a small range of cuvées ranging from single vineyard wines though to multi-site blends using modern and ancient techniques.
Artemis Karamolegos Papas 2016
15% abv
Austere and chalky mineral nose full of iodine. Ripe stone fruit and herbal notes in a salty background. Generously structured mouthfeel, complex and multi-layered. Reminiscent of thyme and tea in a sea driven phenolic palate. Great balance with a long savoury and mineral aftertaste.
From a single vineyard of very old rootstocks (over 150 years old) located on the village of Megalochori producing a rare and special fruit. Classic white vinification under controlled temperature is followed after a short pre-fermentation cold soak. Terroir driven approach in order to express its unique character. Maturation with the gross lees for 22 months in stainless steel tank and 2 months in large oak before bottling. A year of cellaring adds more complexity and layers to this one-of-a-kind wine.
