Barbeito is one of the most forward-thinking companies on Madeira as well as being one of the youngest, being founded in the 1940's by Mário Barbeito. When Mário died in 1985, the company was taken forward by his daughter, Dona Manuela de Freitas, whose two sons, Ricardo and Miguel joined the firm in 1991. Today, Ricardo is in day to day charge of Vinhos Barbeito, his mother having retired in the early 1990s, and his brother looking after other family business interests.
Barbeito Single Harvest Madeira 50cl 2004
This wine originates from the same single vineyard of Tinta Negra that I produced the 1997 bottling. We harvested half the grapes a week before they reached full maturation, thus obtaining higher initial acidity levels. This wine was aged along the last 9 years by the “canteiro” method in old French oak casks. In June of 2010 we bottled 3061 bottles (500ml) all individually numbered.- Barbeito. It is a medium dry style, golden to brown in colour and has loads of walnut, spice and fruitcake notes on the nose and the palate. There is good acidity on the palate and hints of natural sweetness.
