Benjamin Leroux Bourgogne Cote d’Or Rouge ‘PM’ 150cl (JFPO) 2017

13% abv

Vol- 150cl

A unique blend of Pommard & Morey-St-Denis.

Ben Leroux has made a special, one-off bottling of magnums of Bourgogne Rouge in 2017, a blend of 2 barrels of village Morey and 4 barrels of village Pommard, declassified to Bourgogne Rouge hence the “PM” sobriquet. He found that these particular 6 barrels went together perfectly, so decided to declassify it as Bourgogne Rouge and bottle it all in magnums, particularly for serving by the glass in the on-trade. It has been very popular in the USA on this basis, apparently.

Whilst the two appellations together have given a fairly serious wine, the approachable nature of the 2017 vintage means this is a wine that can be enjoyed now. The nose is spicy and floral with some blackcurrant leaf and pretty berry fruit and sweet spice. The palate is quite structured and serious, as one would expect, but it’s well-balanced by concentrated red berry fruit and a refreshing acidity. There’s plenty of layered complexity but this is ready to drink now, ideally with food to balance out the tannins.

Having created a name for himself as régisseur (general manager) of Domaine du Comte Armaud in Pommard, Benjamin Leroux established, with English backing, a small négociant business based in Beaune since 2007. The range is confined to the Côte d’Or, from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin, with the intention of developing farming contracts or indeed purchasing vineyards in the future.

The possibilities are very exciting for this exceptionally talented vigneron. Benjamin is a master at delivering purity of fruit alongside a seamless texture in his wines which have only the subtlest influence of oak. One of Benjamin’s favourite locations for white wine vineyards is the border between Auxey-Duresses and Meursault, which is where Les Vireuils can be found. Here the natural weight of Meursault is enhanced by the fresher minerality typical of the side valley of Auxey-Duresses.
