Boekenhoutskloof Franschhoek Syrah 2017

14.5% abv

Vol- 75cl

From the famed Porseilenberg and Goldmine vineyards. These vineyards grow on the rocky bedrock of decomposed Mica-Schist, a unique terroir expressed by the concentrated and structured wines. hand-harvested into lug boxes and transported to Boekenhoutskloof in Franschhoek for vinification. Grapes are cooled in a cold room then transferred to tulip-shaped concrete tanks for fermentation. A combination of partially destemmed and whole-bunch (40%) clusters ferment spontaneously with minimal sulphur additions and no acidification. A soft délestage is performed 2-3 times per day. Once maceration is complete, the skins are basket pressed and gravity-fed into traditional 2 500L Austrian oak foudres and 600L demi-muids for further ageing of up to 18 months.

“The 2017 Syrah is 35% whole bunch fruit, fermented in concrete and matured for 16 months in 60% new oak. It has a seductive, beautifully defined bouquet, the pure dark cherry, boysenberry and pressed violet aromas wafting from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, astutely judged acidity and lovely cohesion. There is real elegance in this Syrah, and a classic finish. You might well mistake it for the Northern Rhône (Cornas?) if served blind. Superb.95 points Vinous

Boekenhoutskloof was established in 1776. Located in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley, the farm’s name means “ravine of the Boekenhout” (pronounced Book-n-Howed). Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for furniture making.

In 1993 the farm and homestead was bought and restored and a new vineyard planting programme was established that now includes Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier.
