Bruichladdich Organic 2010

50% abv

Today organic farmers are rediscovering farming of a pre-industrial era, the reconnection with time-honoured working of the land that had been unchanged for five thousand years. It celebrates individuality, the delicate harmony between soil, subsoil, bedrock, microclimate, and plant. The French have a word for this concept: terroir. Scotland, by default, had its own terroir too: specific farms that grew barley in a soil that lived and breathed – not inert, dead, waiting for its next chemical fix. This produced the whiskies of the nineteenth century and before. Sadly, today it is homogenous, standard barley, most of it not even grown in Scotland. In December 2003, Bruichladdich distilled the first, Organic Islay Whisky, certified by Demeter. The Chalice barley was grown at Culblair Farm near Inverness in a Site of Special Scientific Interest on glacial gravel deposits with sand and loam and a touch of clay, one mile from the sea. It was malted and shipped to Islay. The 2009 Organic Bruichladdich continues the tradition.

Colour – Dawn on wet sand.
Nose – Candied orange and lemon, beautifully floral. A touch of marine spice and citrus.
Palate – Deliciously creamy with the barley notes very much to the fore.
Finish – A hot toddy

Bruichladdich was built by Barnett Harvey in 1881. The distillery sits across the road from the North Atlantic Ocean, on the blustery island of Islay. Bruichladdich was given new life by Mark Reynier and Jim McEwan in 2001 and has been under the ownership of Remy Cointreau since 2012.

Three different styles of whisky are created at Bruichladdich with three different names representing varying degrees of peat; Bruichladdich: Always unpeated, light, floral and fruity. Port Charlotte: Heavily Peated and elegant, retains the finesse of Bruichladdich but with a backbone of peat. Octomore: the worlds most heavily peated whisky ranging from 107ppm (phenolic parts per million) to above 300ppm. The Botanist Gin is also distilled at Bruichladdich with the 22 botanicals used in distillation foraged from the island.
