Nestled in a hidden valley under the imposing shadow of the Monte Amiata, lies a medieval castle. Restored by the Green family in 2000, the castle now operates not only as one of Tuscany’s most unique wineries but also a cultural centre for gastronomy, well-being, music and agrotourism. The collaboration of the Tuscan sun, mixed volcanic soils and cooling influence of the mountain have created a place of magic and calm.

The vineyard at the Castello di Potentino is situated on the slopes of the highest peak in Tuscany, Monte Amiata, an extinct volcano. The estate is located about 30miles from the Montalcino DOCG area, separated by the river Orcia, in the recently created (1998) Montecucco DOC.

The low, sheltered valley provides summertime hot days but cold nights as the cool air comes down from the mountain. The earth is volcanic, geologically very new, mineral rich and the basin-like shape has of the estate vineyard has helped avoid erosion over the millennia. This minerality creates a notably sapid and fine wine, with subtle bouquets and a rich but not heavy body. Vines have gown here since the time of the Etruscans and the location has helped protect from the impact from intensive monoculture. Only wild yeasts are used in the production of the wines and alongside large oak (5hl), minimal fining and filtration and low levels of added sulphur the potential of the estate’s grapes are allowed to shine.
