Celler Alimara Pinzellada Negre 2018

13.5% abv

Vol- 75cl

Pinzellada is the new range from Celler Alimara and this wine is the predecessor to their iconic La Xispa Seleccio. The Grenache (Garnatxa Negre) is from 30-year-old vines at Mas de Cabrera, and is a fruit-driven red with well-integrated oak and smooth tannins. Ripe red and black fruits dominate the nose and the palate, with notes of cedar and toffee. A rich, intense, well-structured wine, and stunning value for money.

Excellent with chargrilled steaks or roast meats, pizza and strong cheeses. As a vegan wine it is ideal served with rich pulse-laden casseroles or mushroom-based dishes. The wine is ready for drinking now and should ideally be served at 16-18°C. It can also be lightly chilled in the heat of summer.

The heat of 2018 resulted in a low yield of very concentrated fruit. The grapes were handpicked on 28 September. After a five-day cold soak, fermentations followed at up to 26°C in stainless steel, with regular punchdowns. Malolactic fermentation and 21 months’ maturation were carried out in a mixture of old and new 300 litre French oak barrels. The wine is bottled unfiltered.

This is a new winery owned by UK importers Andy & Ali McLeod who have slowly been buying vineyards with old vines of native grapes. Their aim is to produce low volume hand made wines that capture the best of Terra Alta, a region of much potential that has for too long been dominated by uninteresting cooperatives. Located about 30 mins ot the west of Priorat this is Catalunya's most remote DO- on the right bank of the river Ebro, between the towering mountains of Pàndols Cavalls and Els Ports and the border with Aragón.
Winemaking is under the supervision of Andrew Halliwell, who has made wine on five continents and brings a wealth of experience to the team.
