Chateau d’Yquem Sauternes 1er Cru Superieur 37.5cl (AFO) 1998

13% abv

“Pale gold colored, the 1998 d’Yquem features a flamboyant, rock-star nose of allspice, candied ginger, honeycomb and crème brûlée with a core of preserved lemons, mandarin peel and musk perfume plus a waft of potpourri. Beautifully balanced in the mouth, with seamless freshness lifting the decadent sweetness (134.4 grams per liter of residual sugar), it culminates with fantastically persistent layers of exotic spices.”
95 Points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate May 2018

Winery Vintage Report – “The weather was not very sunny, but especially warm, with drought conditions and a heat wave that brought on early bud break. Rain in the first two weeks of September gave rise to botrtyis in grapes that became concentrated thanks to easterly winds. Showers nevertheless interrupted picking for an entire month. The second pass was as plentiful as the first. 1998 Yquem is very seductive and it is said that it is two vintages in one.”

Chateau d`Yquem is often described as the greatest sweet wine in the world. After centuries of family ownership, Yquem was finally sold in acrimonious circumstances to Louis Vuitton-Moët-Hennessy in 1999. However, its former owner and director Alexandre de Lur-Saluce remains in charge.

Yquem is located on the highest hill in Sauternes and enjoys the best growing conditions in the whole appellation. The 110-hectare vineyard is planted with 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. Only fully botrytized fruit is picked by highly skilled pickers and yields are so low that each vine produces only one glass of wine!
