Claude Riffault Sancerre, Les Chasseignes 2019

13.5% abv

“The 2019 Sancerre Les Chasseignes is a picture-book Sancerre from gravelly limestone soils (“calcaire de caillottes”) that assembles the fruit from 11 east- and southeast-facing parcels at 275 meters in altitude. Aged on the lees for 14 months in oak, it opens with a clear, bright yet deep, intense and concentrated bouquet of crushed stones, lemon oil and a hint of fresh oak that disappears with air. Silky, round and very elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, wide, intense and juicy yet pure and stimulating Sancerre with remarkable finesse and lingering salinity. The long and complex finish reveals concentration, very fine tannins and the mouthwatering taste of crushed limestones. Refreshing lime and lemon notes on the aftertaste. A gorgeous wine with chalky veins and the vibration of great terroir. Tasted in February 2021.”
93+ Points, Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate, March 2021

“The 2019 Sancerre Les Chasseignes has a ripe and open expression. It fills the mouth with a sense of effortlessness, which Stephane Riffault puts down to both the caillottes soil and the ripeness of the vintage. It is in the riper spectrum of Sauvignon aromatics. This wine leaves the variety’s green flavors far behind and focuses instead on orchard fruit and almost heads into the realms of tropical fruit, which isn’t something you normally associate with Sancerre. Gently refreshing with the caillottes providing a line of chalkiness on the finish. One for the short to medium term due to the vintage’s ripe profile.” 2021 -2028

Having joined the family business in 2001 and been handed the keys to the estate in 2015, Stéphane Riffault has implemented changes that have refined its wines to be some of tyhe most compelling from the region. Starting with the move to hand harvesting in 2008. In 2013, the family moved its 15 hectares to organics, achieving certification in 2016. This led to biodynamic conversion starting in 2018, and 2020 was the first fully biodynamic harvest. All the white wines (it does have 2ha of Pinot Noir) are fermented and aged in large wood. Malolactic fermentation is always avoided, and even its largest production wine, Les Boucauds, spends 10 months on lees. Time on lees rises to 14 months for the single vineyard Les Chasseignes, Les Denisottes and Les Chailloux, creating richly textured, lightly autolytic expressions. Every single cuvée, from its ‘entry-level’ Sancerre Blanc upwards exhibits his texural, seductive style. These are not generic Sancerres' yet the ideal is not to work in new ways for their own sake. Stephane uses the best technique, knowledge and process the world of fine wine can offer to take the wines of the region to their best expression and trusts in where that may lead. Stéphane's brother Benoit is winemaker at the Domaine Étienne Sauzet in Puligny-Montrachet, and they might have an intense exchange about viticultural and winemaking techniques
