Paul Avril’s estate Clos du Papes is Rhône royalty and the wines produced here have a unique elegance and piercing aromatic expression that earns them a legendary reputation. Production is modern but eschews the use of new oak or filtering of any kind and, perhaps most importantly no super priced super cuvées – all the best fruit and wine making energy goes into creating the single sublime wine that has been produced here for over a century.

Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge [En Primeur – Due Summer 2023] 2021
14% abv
The 2021 Clos des Papes Rouge has wonderfully fresh, concentrated nose of raspberries, blackberries and a subtle top note of sweet spice. The palate is supremely elegant with lashings of ripe, black and red hedgerow berries coming to the fore yet the waves of fruit are perfectly grounded by an earthy, herbaceous twist. The gorgeous flavours are perfectly complemented by a violet lift and the slightest hint of dark chocolate. Framing all this are simply incredible tannins. They are ultra-fine yet somehow manage still to have persistence and grip, pointing towards the long ageing potential of this wine despite its midweight feel. Not that Clos des Papes needs any comparison but there is a thought-provoking quality to the finish that is reminiscent of Burgundy. Glorious. Perfect. Drink 2025 to 2046.
