Coteaux du Vendomois Le Carillon de Vendome Cocagne Rose 2017

12.5% abv

A nose of pink grapefruit, spices and flints with red pepper.

Tastes of expressive fresh and fruity roundness, very elegant and complex. A great presence of armoas of citrus and raspberry with hints of cardamom and peppery zest with fine crisp lemons.

Rarely grown outside of Loire, Pineau d’Aunis has a characteristically fresh, peppery finish which complements the bright, zesty fruit on the palette.

Pineau d’Aunis is a dark-skinned wine grape variety whose story began in the Loire Valley in the Middle Ages. Despite once being popular with royalty on both sides of the English Channel, the variety is now increasingly rare, and is limited to a role in the roses and light reds of the central Loire. It is valued for the gently peppery spiciness it brings to the area’s rose wines, a role mirrored by the Carignan and Tibouren used to make the famous rose wines of Provence. When the elements grant the Loire a vintage with warm weather more akin to that found in Provence, Pineau d’Aunis is also capable of producing distinctive and interesting red wines.

Founded in 1929, the Cave Coopérative du Vendômois has twenty growers who deliver grapes to be sold under the Coteaux du Vendômois appellation. Until the mid-1990s nine-tenths of the production was sold en-vrac to either private clients or the négoce although the balance has now reversed, with most of the wine leaving in bottle. With this quality remit in mind, resident winemaker Nicolas Parmentier has also been identifying specific parcels for special attention.

Le Carillon de Vendôme is a nursery rhyme dating back to the 15th Century and believed to be France’s oldest folk song. Its melody echoes the peel of the bells of the Abbaye de la Trinité in the town of Vendôme. The refrain describes the position of the Dauphin (later Charles VII). After signing the Treaty of Troyes during the Hundred Years’ War, Charles was left only in possession of the cities of Orléans, Beaugency, Cléry, Bourges and Vendôme, with the rest of his Kingdom being occupied by England and its allies.
