CVNE ‘Vina Real’ Rioja Gran Reserva 2016
14.5% abv
Vintage 2016 was one of the greatest on record all across Europe. One of those rare, long even growing seasons that has resulted in legendary wines that are becoming harder and harder to secure.
But here we have an exceptional ready to drink Gran Reserva just being released, ready to begin decades of evolution. Launched in the 1920s, Viña Real became known for pioneering wines from Rioja Alavesa. A careful balance between tradition and modernity has defined Viña Real’s ethos ever since. The Viña Real Gran Reserva is exceptional value for money, a high scoring wine which can age for decades but is ready drink on release.
Luis Gutierrez of Wine Advocate scoring the 1959 vintage 100 points in a vertical tasting held in 2015 is a great example of the potential that Viña Real Gran Reserva has. Luis also recently awarded the 1947 Viña Real Gran Reserva Especial 100 points in a recent tasting comparing Rioja and Bordeaux from 1947. The ‘Especial’ name was awarded to the Viña Real Gran Reservas made in remarkable vintages rather than any difference in the vineyards or winery.
“The extremely affordable 2016 Viña Real Gran Reserva Especial recovers the “Especial” mention from the old Reserva Especial vintages from a very good year. It’s a classical Rioja Alavesa blend of 95% Tempranillo with 5% Graciano from their own vineyards. It’s open and expressive, with notes of berries, fresh blood and iron, orange peel and sweet spices with the oak still present and in need of some more time in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied and feels lean and serious, with abundant chalky tannins. This should be a classical vintage of this wine in the making. It matured in barrel for two years and no less than three in bottle. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2019. 95 Points, Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate, July ‘22
