Domaine des Echardieres Sauvignon de Touraine 2021

12% abv

Vol- 75cl

For those looking for a less expensive alternative to the Sauvignon’s of the Berry, the logical place to start looking is along the banks of the river Cher, somewhere between the towns of Saint-Aignan and Bleré. But, as they say, there are two sides to every river and the Cher is no different.

On the right bank, the land is relatively flat and sandy, with the occasional outcrop of limestone; a legacy of the period when this was the alluvial plain of both the Loire and Cher. It’s on this side that most of the Touraine Sauvignon’s are grown, albeit on soils that are probably better suited for the propagation of asparagus and strawberries.

The general character of the wines here is one of immediate and intense Sauvignon aroma and flavour, but these tend to be short-lived and have a tendency to fall over within a year or so of the vintage. The rive-gauche, however, is a different proposition. Between the villages of Châteauvieux in the east and Saint-Georges-sur-Cher in the west, the vineyards are all located on a limestone plateau ensuring a much more interesting selection of soils; notably silex (known locally as perruches), argile-silicieux and caillots. Of course, these vineyards are harder to work, with more fractioned parcels for a start. But the vines here are generally older and many are still harvested by hand. They are more expensive too, yet still only half the ex-cellar price of fairly average examples found in both Pouilly-sur-Loire and Sancerre, and which share the same soils.

Luc Poullain bought Domaine des Echardières and its 16 hectares of vines as a going concern in 2000. He was 30 years old at the time. An interesting career path, he’d studied as an agricultural engineer in Bedfordshire in the early 1990s (which rather explains his excellent grasp of the English language), before returning to France to sell, ironically, chemicals to the wine industry.

Although the cellar is situated in the village of Pouillé, the majority of the vines are located on what is referred to as the Premier Côte above the neighbouring commune of Angé. Split almost equally white and red, there are seven hectares of Sauvignon, planted on two different soil types and vinified apart. There are also plantings of the usual Gamay, Cabernet Franc and Côt (Malbec).
