Having sold their successful IT business in London, Brian and Marion Smith searched wine regions to realise their dream to make outstanding, small quantity wines, eventually settling on the unique terroir of the Elgin Valley in South Africa. Certified organic and using many biodynamic practices, ploughing is done by Maddox, a gentle Percheron horse, and pest control is handled by ducks patrolling the vineyards.
Elgin Ridge 282 Sauvignon Blanc 2017
13% abv
The 282 Elgin Ridge biodynamic Sauvignon Blanc was made using natural fermentation and 12% of the wine was aged in a concrete egg for 9 months before bottling. Harvested late for a richer style and more intense fruit character of melon, ripe pear with an undertone of lime. The only ingredient added is a naturally mined clay to clarify the wine and just enough sulphur to keep the wine fresh. This ‘more natural’ approach to winemaking and farming ensures they make wines that are truly expressive of the vintage and of Elgin where the grapes are grown. The 282 refers to the vineyard height.
