Esk Valley Winemakers Reserve Blend 2016

13% abv

Deeply coloured and mouth-filling with firm but supple tannins. Black olive, cherry, red plum, sage and dried herb flavours are complemented by an overlay of cedar from barrel maturation. This a complex and age-worthy wine from the estate responsible for the Seminal NZ Bordeaux blend, The Terraces.
This wine is a blend of grapes grown in the stony soils of the Gimblett Gravels – 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 30% Malbec. The vines in the Cornerstone and nearby Ngakirikiri and Twyford Gravels vineyards were planted in 1990, 1994 and 2002 respectively and cropped at low levels to produce grapes of the highest possible quality. Intensive viticultural practices such as shoot thinning, leaf plucking and bunch thinning were employed over the course of the growing season to further maximise the vineyard’s potential. The individual vineyard parcels were harvested separately and destemmed to original 1930s concrete fermenters for fermentation. Indigenous and selected yeast cultures were employed and once active, the ferments were gently hand plunged 4 times daily. After a period of post-fermentation maceration, the ferments were pressed to barrel for malolactic fermentation. The wine was then aged in French oak barriques of which 40% were new, for 17 months before blending and bottling unfined and unfiltered in December 2017.

Esk Valley Estate was first established by Englishman Robert Bird in 1933 under the name Glenvale. Bird constructed the winery and cellars and focussed on producing fortified wine styles that were popular at the time. Glenvale grew quickly and at its peak was the 5th largest winery in New Zealand.

Sir George Fistonich owner of Villa Maria purchased and renamed the estate in 1986 with a focus on high quality wines from local Hawkes Bay vineyards. In 1988 a program to re-establish an abandoned terraced vineyard was undertaken. This vineyard on the north facing valley wall of the old winery site was planted in 1989 and the resulting wine, The Terraces, has become one of New Zealand’s most highly sought-after wines.

Their long-standing winemaker, Gordon Russell, was appointed in 1993 and has dedicated the last 25 years to developing their reputation as a boutique winery, renowned for hand-crafted premium reds and elegant whites.
