Esk Valley River Gravels Merlot Malbec Cabernet 2019

13% abv

Vol- 75cl

Rich aromas of black fruit and fragrant spicy oak dominate this sumptuous red wine. The palate is full-bodied with incredible concentration of supple, rich ripe fruit, smooth ripe tannins, beautifully integrated oak and great complexity.

“A polished and highly concentrated Bordeaux blend, offering mouthwatering acidity and grippy, mocha-like tannins, the 2019 River Gravels has clearly been loved, as demonstrated by its intensity of fruit and sleek texture. It was fermented in concrete before spending 19 months in French barrels (45% new). The structured finish offers oak-derived festive spices like cinnamon and clove alongside the black currant and soft red fruit. This wine is raw and awkward in its overly enthusiastic youth and needs more time for those tannins to polymerize.” 2024 – 2034
93 Points, Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous, Jan 2022

This wine is a blend from grapes grown on the stony soils of the Gimblett Gravels. The vines in the Ngakirikiri, Twyford and Omahu Gravels vineyards are now approaching 20 years of age and are cropped at low levels to produce grapes of the highest possible quality. 38% Cabernet Sauvignon 28% Merlot 19% Malbec 15% Cabernet Franc

Intensive viticultural practices such as shoot and bunch thinning and leaf plucking were employed over the course of the growing season to further maximise the vineyards’ potential. The individual vineyard parcels were harvested separately and destemmed to open topped concrete fermenters for fermentation. Indigenous and selected red wine yeast strains were employed and once 0 the ferments were gently hand plunged up to four times daily. After a period of post fermentation maceration the ferments were pressed to barrel and tank for malolactic fermentation. The wine was then aged for 16 months in French oak barriques (45% new) before bottling.

Esk Valley Estate was first established by Englishman Robert Bird in 1933 under the name Glenvale. Bird constructed the winery and cellars and focussed on producing fortified wine styles that were popular at the time. Glenvale grew quickly and at its peak was the 5th largest winery in New Zealand.

Sir George Fistonich owner of Villa Maria purchased and renamed the estate in 1986 with a focus on high quality wines from local Hawkes Bay vineyards. In 1988 a program to re-establish an abandoned terraced vineyard was undertaken. This vineyard on the north facing valley wall of the old winery site was planted in 1989 and the resulting wine, The Terraces, has become one of New Zealand’s most highly sought-after wines.

Their long-standing winemaker, Gordon Russell, was appointed in 1993 and has dedicated the last 25 years to developing their reputation as a boutique winery, renowned for hand-crafted premium reds and elegant whites.
