The Franciacorta wine region is midway between Milan to the west and Lake Garda to the east. The area has been producing high quality, bottle-fermented sparkling wines since the 1950s with local viticulture dating back millennia. Roberto Gatti founded the estate in 1990 after a long career at one of the region’s early pioneer producers, Bellavista, and is now aided by Laura and Matteo, his children. The wines of Franciacorta are produced using the same techniques as Champagne. However, given the region’s more Southerly location the wines produced come from riper grapes leading to lower additions of sugars and a fresher, cleaner style.
Ferghettina Franciacorta Extra Brut
Immediately impressive! The wine has a beautiful pale-mid golden colour and a maelstrom of tiny bubbles. The long lees ageing gives it an aristocratic, serious and very refined quality. A nose of apples and toasty notes from yeast lees contact. The palate has more apple, with lemon, brioche and toast. A well balanced and refreshing finish. Big flavours, but also very fresh with great acidity and just perfect ‘mousse’.
