The Franciacorta wine region is midway between Milan to the west and Lake Garda to the east. The area has been producing high quality, bottle-fermented sparkling wines since the 1950s with local viticulture dating back millennia. Roberto Gatti founded the estate in 1990 after a long career at one of the region’s early pioneer producers, Bellavista, and is now aided by Laura and Matteo, his children. The wines of Franciacorta are produced using the same techniques as Champagne. However, given the region’s more Southerly location the wines produced come from riper grapes leading to lower additions of sugars and a fresher, cleaner style.
Ferghettina Franciacorta Pas Dose Riserva 33 2011
100% Chardonnay cuvee made with no dosage of sugar. 80 months of bottle aging and scrupulous fruit selection set this amongst the very best sparkling wines of the world. Elegant with the aromas of white fruits and spring there is an unmistakable strength underpinning this sublime wine. It dances the line between muscularity from its extended aging and teasing glimpses of baked fruit and white flowers. Winner of a coveted 3 Bicchieri award from the Gambero Rosso Guide for 2015.
