For over three decades Boutinot has been based in the Mâconnais in southern Burgundy; relying upon Samantha Bailey to craft and blend wines which honestly express the tapestry of the local terroir. With a ‘back of the hand’ knowledge of the effect of each slope and soil type on a wine, they dared to imagine owning an estate, yet such opportunities are rare in Burgundy as domaines pass from one generation to the next. Finally, they bought two key plots in the best climats of Saint-Véran, together with a gravity fed winery (in need of renovation) and a 300 year old house made of the local honey stone.A place they call GENETIE, in honour of the mysterious name found etched into the stone of a listed pillar within the building.
Genetie Saint-Véran La Rencontre 2020

La Rencontre’ translates from French as ‘a meeting of people’. Meeting people in our business is important – the meeting of winemakers and growers becomes a melting pot of information and ideas. After a fortuitous meeting with a grower where the wines were simply fantastic – the alchemy and fun began, in glorious Saint-Véran.
Saint-Véran is an appellation that shares many similarities with it’s ‘big brother’ Pouilly Fuissé and some of the best sites are situated on the foothills of two ‘rochers’ that are dominant features of the southern Mâconnais country side – La Roche de Solutré and La Roche de Vergisson. Here the granitic sub soil has its word to say and lends an elegant flinty edge to some quite tender Chardonnay. The wine has undergone partial malolcatic fermentation, which gives the wine a subtle creamy texture, weight and presence.
