Giaconda Estate Vineyard Shiraz 2018

13% abv

Exceptionally complex, dark and brooding. Black plum and wild berry fruits are complimented by graphite, undergrowth, smoked meats and elegant floral notes. The palate is plush followed with a crescendo of tannins that whisk the wine on a long journey over the palate. Here stands the iron fist in a velvet glove. Savoury tannins build on a long, spicy and complete mouthful of flavours. Despite the power and full throttle fruit, this wine retains an elegance and nobility often talked about though rarely seen. One of the most complete and satisfying Estate Vineyard wines released to date. Winemakers note.

“Deep, bright red colour with a good tint of purple and a lovely spicy bouquet, which instantly evokes the Northern Rhône. The wine is full-bodied and very intense, lushly-fruited, soft and sweet in the centre, with amplitude and supple texture so that it already drinks really well. It finishes long in the mouth and will age well. A superb shiraz. 2020-2038” 96/100 Huon Hooke – The Real Review (May 20)

Giaconda wines are hand-crafted according to basically a natural wine making process. Indigenous yeasts are employed for fermentation, natural bacteria for Malolactic fermentation, French oak barrel ageing, minimal sulphur additions, and no filtration before bottling.

The winery, barrel maturation cave and bottling facility are all set up for gravity flow. This means the wines are very rarely pumped or manipulated mechanically. Instead they are gently moved by gravity or gas pressure during the entire wine making process.

For the red wines, a combination of whole bunch and de-stemmed crushed fruit is transferred to large concrete tanks for fermentation. These wines remain on skins for an extended period to develop softer, finer tannins and more complexity; before being basket pressed and transferred to French oak barrels (up to 40% new in some cases) for ageing.

The wines are aged in French oak for almost two years – deep underground in the granite maturation cave. This cave offers optimal conditions for fermentation and ageing with a stable temperature of 16 degrees centigrade and naturally high humidity all year round.

Giaconda is one of Australia’s most famous names. The Beechworth winery was established by Rick Kinzbrunner in 1982. A mechanical engineer by training, he became interested in wine in the early 1970s and spent the next 10 years traveling to wine-growing regions to learn as much as possible.

Rick was the first to establish a vineyard of any consequence in Beechworth when he first planted in 1982, but today there are over 30 based in the area. This little-known inland region is in north-eastern Victoria, in the foothills and within sight of the Victorian Alps, approximately midway between Melbourne and Sydney.

Giaconda is best known for its Chardonnay, but also produces Shiraz and Pinot Noir. The wines here are hand-crafted by Rick and his son Nathan, who do everything themselves and only take on help at harvest. Some of the most desirable wines in Australia, and indeed the world, Giaconda’s wines are in regrettably short supply, as they only produce 30 to 40,000 bottles a year.
