Gladstone Vineyards Pinot Noir 2019

13% abv

Vol- 75cl

An intense hit of cherry and dark plum is balanced with alluring floral and earthy nuances. Chocolate, coffee and oak combine beautifully with the plush juiciness of this wine to deliver a round and generous palate and silky textural finish. Drink now, or cellar for up to 10 years.

The Gladstone Pinot Noir is a single vineyard wine with all the grapes grown at the wineries organically farmed Dakins Road block. The wine is crafted from a range of clones- including 5, 6, 114, 115, 667, 777, 10/5 and Abel – adding complexity and nuance to the final blend. The vines were carefully managed to give maximum sun exposure to the fruit for optimum ripeness, and the fruit was hand harvested.

Fruit is chilled and crushed into 1.5 and 2 ton fermentation tanks. As far as possible all clones are vinified separately to give expression to each clone’s unique character. Following a cold soak period of 3-5 days the wine undergoes a combination of wild and inoculated ferments. All batches received a post-soak of between 2-3 weeks. Batches are plunged by hand to ensure a soft extraction of tannins and then pressed off and matured in French oak barrels (25% new) for 10 months, each with its own balanced oak regime of barrel age and choice of coopers. Wines are lightly filtered before bottling.

Gladstone Vineyard, planted in 1986, is located in Gladstone; the central sub-region of the Wairarapa valley. The vineyards are planted along the river terraces of the Ruamahanga River, which has a unique free-draining soil profile of clay over stony silt loams. The microclimatic conditions of their vineyards are semi-maritime, which experiences very cool springs, extended sunshine hours and high exposure to UV light, which provides ideal conditions for the ripening of premium wine grapes.

In 2018, Eddie McDougall and a consortium under The Flying Winemaker acquired Gladstone Vineyard with the view to write the next exciting chapter of this prestigious wine estate. Under Eddie’s helm, Gladstone Vineyard now manages and collaborates with several premium vineyards and growers across the Wairarapa and Hawkes’ Bay; diversifying the estate’s portfolio of wines. In light of the expanding vineyard footprint, Gladstone Vineyard’s core vision remains to be the number one producer of Pinot Noir in New Zealand.
