Jean-Paul Balland has handed over the running of this Sancerre domaine to his two daughters, Elise and Isabelle. Isabelle’s husband Julien joined the Domaine in 2017. Burgundy-trained oenologist Isabelle makes the wines, and Elise runs an impressively efficient office. They have some 20 hectares with fine plots on Le Grand Chemarin and Le Chêne Marchand. New impressive cellars were completed just in time for the 2015 vintage and the wines are even better! The wines of Bué are full and rich in style, the Balland wines are a classic example from this village. It is said that Jean-Paul made the best wine in the village and was one of the first in Sancerre to vinify Sauvignon Blanc in new oak: we certainly don’t believe that Isabelle is doing any less well – lovely wines.
Jean-Paul Balland Sancerre Rouge 2019
A brilliant herry-red appearance, beautifully intense with a purple fringe. Greedy concentration of black fruits (blackcurrant, blueberry), spices (pepper) with a hint of toffee, spices (cinamon), vanilla and cedar. Full bodied attack with fine tannins.Scented notes of ripe, toasted bread and liquorice, violets and coffee scents.
The SANCERRE RED WINE AOC 2018 comes exclusively from Pinot Noir cultivated on a 2.15 hectares area on chalky clay soils. This vintage obtained the “TERRA VITIS” certification. After destemming, the grapes are put in stainless still vats for maceration during about twenty days. Two third of the harvest are aged in new oak casks in which they made their malo lactic fermentation. Then they are fined with gelatin before being filtered.
The bottling is done twelve months following the harvest.
