Júlia Bernet Exsum 2015
13% abv
Júlia Bernet is among a small group who have broken ties with the Cava D.O. to form their own body Corpinnat, producing wines solely from Penedès rather than that much broader area permitted by Cava. The name Corpinnat is derived from two Spanish words meaning ‘heart of Penedès’, and it’s members must produce terroir driven wines using sustainable organic viticulture with at least 90% indigenous varieties, harvested by hand, then vinified entirely on their own premises and aged for a minimum of 18 months. In short, Corpinnat wines are equals alongside the other great sparkling wines of the world, with regulations that effectively rule out the major Cava producers from participating in the organisation.
Xavi owns 7 hectares of vineyards within Alt-Penedès sub-region, in the rolling foothills of the d’Ordal Mountains. The vineyards are mostly Xarel.lo, providing structure and longevity to the wines, which are all produced from a single vintage. As opposed to the more Mediterranean of the lower Baix-Penedès, the climate here is more continental. With some vineyards at over 400m elevation, winter snow is common, and while summer daytime temperatures are high, the nights are relatively cool.
Exsum is produced from Xarel.lo Vermell, a pinkish mutation of Xarel.lo, late-ripening, with thick skins and higher acidity. Vinified using the méthode ancestrale.
