Kistler Vineyards Laguna Ridge Pinot Noir 2018

This ridge-top vineyard looks to the coast in one direction and the Russian River Valley in the other. Laguna Ridge sits on layers of sandstone, granular sediments and shards of petrified wood and has been the source of the Laguna Ridge (formerly labelled as Kistler Vineyard) Pinot Noir since 2006. Produces a Pinot Noir of balanced concentration, holding an impressive, precise energy throughout its deep red and blue berry fruited core, subtle mineral undertones and lifted delicate varietal aromatics.

“Medium ruby-purple, the 2018 Pinot Noir Laguna Ridge Vineyard is still shy at this youthful stage, taking its time to unfurl to scents of smoked cranberries, fresh violets, fragrant earth, tangerine peel and touches of woodsmoke, tree bark and graphite. In the mouth, it has a medium weight, a very, very silky texture and fantastic bitterness, framed by bright, ripe fruits and addicting juiciness, finishing very long and with incredible lingering flavors. Pure class.” Drink 2020 – 2027
95+ Points, Erin Brooks, The Wine Advocate, July 2020

“The 2018 Pinot Noir Laguna Ridge is tightly wound and austere in the early going. Crushed raspberry, blood orange, mint and dried flowers add an attractive savory dimension. Translucent and yet not especially forthcoming, the 2018 clearly needs time to be at its best.”

Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler believed that remarkable and charactered Chardonnays of site could in fact be grown and produced in California. It was a notion ahead of its time. For the last forty years this pursuit continues without compromise. Bill Price, longtime owner of Durell Vineyards purchased an interest in Kistler Vineyards from Steve in 2008. Jason Kesner joined Steve in the cellar in 2008 in order to begin to lay the groundwork for the next forty years. Steve retired from Kistler Vineyards at the end of 2017.

They work with a single heritage Californian selection of Chardonnay planted across fifteen vineyards, from Carneros to Sonoma Valley, to the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast. They produce eleven vineyard designate Chardonnays and are wholly dedicated to the ideal of wines of site. The Pinot Noirs come from a pair of specially selected clones propogated for over 25 years from materila gathered from a Burgundian Grand Cru. All wines ferment with wild yeasts.
