Joseph Krug founded the house after a spell working at Jacquesson in 1842. The house is soley focussed on quality, ruthless selecton of vines and parcels of wines. All wines are fermented in small, old barriques, little to no malolactic is used and all go through a very slow second fermentation. The youngest wines undergo between five and seven years lees contact and can be made up of up to fifteen different vintages. This is a prestige cuvee house of the highest quality.

Krug Grande Cuvee 164 Edition
12% abv
A light golden colour and fine, vivacious bubbles, holding a promise of pleasure. Aromas of flowers in bloom, ripe, dried and citrus fruits, as well as marzipan and gingerbread. Flavours of hazelnut, nougat, barley sugar, jellied and citrus fruits, almonds, brioche and honey.
“A stellar Champagne, Krug’s NV Grande Cuvée 164ème Édition, (2008 base vintage) is painfully tight. The 164 is a fabulous wine, but readers should not fall into the temptation of opening a bottle anytime soon. Crushed rocks, slate, mint, sage and white pepper lend striking aromatic brightness. The 164 is just as compelling as it has always been. Even so, it needs time to be at its very best. The 164 is a blend based on 2008, with reserve wines back to 1990. Krug ID: 316031. Krug Grande Cuvée 164ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2008. Following a mild winter, overcast spring and cool summer, there was concern over the maturation of the grapes, further compounded by a severe hailstorm that hit the village of Sainte-Gemme, reputed for its plots of Meunier. But in mid-September, the clouds miraculously parted and favourable conditions lasted throughout the harvest, which gave us grapes in excellent health and with a good level of maturity.
Krug’s unique respect for the individual character of each plot enabled the House to discern the strong potential of a number of lesser-known plots to enhance the blend while wines from plots in Villers-Marmery, Trépail, Mareuil and Ambonnay proved to be the foremost contributors to this singular creation.
Krug Grande Cuvée 164ème Édition is a blend of 127 wines from 11 different years, the youngest of which is from 2008, while the oldest dates back to 1990. Its final composition is 48% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 17% Meunier. The wines of the year make up 68% of the final blend. A select number of carefully chosen reserve wines from 11 previous years ensure the breadth, depth, roundness, finesse and elegance so essential to the creation of every Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée.
