Kusuda Martinborough Riesling 2019

11.7% abv

Vol- 75cl

‘The uplifting vigour of this wine makes the aromas spring from the glass. It is very pure; notes of green apple and lemon-lime citrus envelop a pure core of wet stone minerality. With a bit of air, the green apple moves to notes of Golden Delicious, slightly riper. The palate is piercingly fresh, bright and full of energy. Keen acidity, almost sherbet-like, makes the palate sing. More green apple (Granny Smith now) comes through with a light, pithy, phenolic dryness on the tongue. This is still so young and vibrant but it is possible already to feel how this wine will develop, gaining those richer notes of stone fruit and petrol with age. All is there: it just needs time. This is an incredibly fine, sophisticated, exquisitely dry Riesling. Drink 2022-2030 (or later, depending on how you like your Riesling).’ – Catriona Felstead MW, April 2021

“This dry Riesling is pure and pristine with a delicate scent: think white flowers, talc, lemon peel and freshly baked apple. Despite Martinborough’s naturally racy acidity and the low level of residual sugar (3.2g/L), the overall impression is one of balance, with a pleasing sense of grip on the finish. While delightful in youth and light in body, this has sufficient extract to develop over at least a decade or more. 11.5% alcohol.” 2020-2030
92 Points, Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous Nov 2020

Harvested carefully by hand at the start of April, then whole bunch pressed, settled for 48 hours with bentonite and fermented for 16 days in stainless steel.

Average spring started to warm up before summer, and there was a worry about over-ripeness after the hot period between late January and mid February. The very cool snap from the end of February provided the perfect brake and gave the necessary balance to the ripe fruit. Only 4124 bottles produced.

Before embarking on his winemaking career, Tokyo-born Hiroyuki (known as Hiro) Kusuda trained as a lawyer, worked for Fujitsu and worked at the Consulate General of Japan in Sydney. Hiro sought a winemaking education in English, but was dissuaded by the fees that foreign students were charged at Davis in California and Roseworthy in Austrlia. Instead, he went to Germany, learned the language, enrolled at Geisenheim and then emigrated to New Zealand to work as an assistant to his friend Kai Schubert, who had been a few years ahead of him at Geisenheim. This led him to the tiny town of Martinborough to pursue both the Riesling and Pinot grapes – to which a third challenge, Syrah, has now been added.

Obviously the main market for Kusuda is Japan, where they have developed a cult following, and indeed whence comes the volunteer labour force at harvest time when every grape is rigorously checked before making the cut. Hiro Kusuda is meticulous to an almost fanatical degree, but it explains the exceptional quality and amazing precision of his wines.
