Laherte Freres Les 7 (Solera 05- 2016) NV

13% abv

The Les 7 is made from the same varieties that their ancestors had cultivated many centuries ago. Working methods and grape varieties were different at that time. However, they found those
lost grape varieties again on old plots and they have recreated aformer plot in order to taste a wine of Champagne with the same taste as 250 years ago again.

The Terroir of Chavot. The parcel was planted by Thierry Laherte in 2003. Terroir of Chavot. Chalky-clay soils with the presence of pebbles. All 7 Varieties are in this blend; 10% Pinot Gris, 18% Chardonnay, 18% Meunier, 15% Petit Meslier, 8% Arbanne, 14% Pinot Noir, 17% Pinot Blanc.

All of the grapes are picked up by hand when fully ripen, then put in a traditional press. Natural alcoholic fermentation takes place in barrels. There is no malolactic fermentation in this cuvee. Ageing on lees takes place for 6 months with regular lees stirring. The wins is non-vintage with the wines being drawn from what can only be descibed as a solera system. All bottles are disgorged by hand with a dosage of 4 g/l.

“Les 7 : The NV Les 7 (2005-2015) is a blend of the seven permitted varieties in Champagne based on 2015 with 40% of a perpetual solera that goes back to 2005. The combination of varieties and wines yields a Champagne of uncommon complexity. Dried pear, citrus peel, sage and herb notes build in in a bright, tense Champagne that grows in the glass, finishing with lovely textural balance and silkiness. Like so many wines based on 2015, Les 7 has a slight vegetal quality that is perceptible but not overpowering.”

Laherte Frères was founded in the nineteenth century with current winemaker Aurélien representing the 7th Generation. They own nine hectares of land spread over ten communes and an astonishing seventy different parcels. Vineyards are currently farmed biodynamically or are in the process of conversion. The family holdings are mainly located around Épernay, nearby Chavot (where the winery is located), Moussy and Vaudancourt. In addition, they own parcels in the Côte des Blancs and the Marne Valley. They cultivate all three main varieties with Pinot Meunier very well represented as one would expect given the local terroir. Primary ferments are mostly in wood - small barrels and foudres - with only partial malolactic and 6 months lees aging before secondary ferment. Dosage is kept low and each wine is carefully crafted to see the varieties used best exploit the estate’s patchwork of fine terroir.

“These Champagnes reinforce my strongly held view that Aurélien Laherte is one of the most talented vignerons of his generation in Champagne. The range this year is truly stellar. Readers who have not tasted these Champagnes owe it to themselves do so. Aurélien Laherte is young, passionate and humble. It is only a matter of time before he is recognized as one of Champagne’s elite vignerons. As for the wines, they are spectacular”. Antonio Galloni, Vinous
