Laherte Freres Les Grands Crayeres 1er Cru Extra Brut 2015

13% abv

This wine put in advance the particular and complex Terroir of Les Coteaux Sud d’ Epernay : a few plots have soft soils and the Campanian Chalk is present at 20 cm. In 2014 the decision was made to vinify seperately and create a new single vineyard cuvee to present these Chardonnay with finesse and relief. The vines are grown with the respect of nature, using organic and biodynamic practices.

This wine is made of 100% Chardonnay from a single vintage. All of the grapes are picked up by hand when fully ripen, then put in a traditional press. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in barrels. There is no malolactic fermentation in this cuvee. Ageing on lees takes place for 6 months. All bottles are disgorged by hand with 3-4g/l dosage.

“Disgorged in February 2019 with four grams per liter dosage, the 2015 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Grandes Crayères represents the debut of a new cuvée from Laherte. Deriving from two chalky plots located in the village of Chavot-Choucourt in the Côteaux Sud d’Éprnay, it’s showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with inviting aromas of citrus oil, crushed oyster shell, dried white flowers and crisp green apple. Full-bodied, pillowy and incisive, with a layered and concentrated core, racy acids and a delicate pinpoint mousse, it concludes with a finish of intensely sapid, indeed almost mordant chalkiness—which lends the wine dynamism rare in this ripe vintage.”
95 Points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate

“The 2015 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Grandes Crayères 1er Cru is fabulous and also one of the clear highlights in this stunning range of Champagnes from Aurelien Laherte. Rich, dense and explosive, with tremendous textural resonance, Les Grandes Crayères hits all the right notes. In the glass, the 2015 is intensely mineral and yet it also possesses stunning depth. Bright citrus and floral notes add striking layers of nuance. Readers will find a remarkably pure, crystalline Blanc de Blancs that captures a dazzling expression of Chardonnay. Don’t miss it. Dosage: 4 gr/L. Disgorged: February, 2019.”

Laherte Frères was founded in the nineteenth century with current winemaker Aurélien representing the 7th Generation. They own nine hectares of land spread over ten communes and an astonishing seventy different parcels. Vineyards are currently farmed biodynamically or are in the process of conversion. The family holdings are mainly located around Épernay, nearby Chavot (where the winery is located), Moussy and Vaudancourt. In addition, they own parcels in the Côte des Blancs and the Marne Valley. They cultivate all three main varieties with Pinot Meunier very well represented as one would expect given the local terroir. Primary ferments are mostly in wood - small barrels and foudres - with only partial malolactic and 6 months lees aging before secondary ferment. Dosage is kept low and each wine is carefully crafted to see the varieties used best exploit the estate’s patchwork of fine terroir.

“These Champagnes reinforce my strongly held view that Aurélien Laherte is one of the most talented vignerons of his generation in Champagne. The range this year is truly stellar. Readers who have not tasted these Champagnes owe it to themselves do so. Aurélien Laherte is young, passionate and humble. It is only a matter of time before he is recognized as one of Champagne’s elite vignerons. As for the wines, they are spectacular”. Antonio Galloni, Vinous
