Lorenzo Accomasso Barolo Riserva 2011

13.5% abv

The Barolo Riserva from Accomasso is an equal part blend of his Rocchette and Rocchettevino holdings. How much is made, how is it made, where is it available. All sensible questions on the face of it but an anthema to a man whose reticence to expand beyond selling his sought after wines from the cellar door is legendary. Nearly 70 vintages in and with perhaps 1000 cases of all his wines including some Barbera and Dolcetto theser is no reason for, or likelihood of, change. Traditional Barolo with the inherent personality and individuality that made the regions so renowned.

The 2011 displays the warmth of this vintage but its potency has aided in a slip forward in drinking window with it now coming into its own.

"There are various categories of winemakers: commercial winemakers, artisan winemakers, biodynamic winemakers, natural winemakers and so forth. Then, there is the farmer winemaker, and this is a category that is particularly prolific in Italy. Lorenzo Accomasso is one of these. I'm not sure how he functions in a modern world without the technology we rely on so heavily. Lorenzo Accomasso is stuck at the fax machine, and even then I got the distinct impression that he mentioned his fax only to make the proverbial bella figura. He later admitted the fax was broken anyway. As I learned last year, tasting at the winery makes little sense because you are never sure of what you are drinking. During my visit, Lorenzo left the room and returned with a glass of wine for me to taste. I never saw the bottle. The wine was excellent, and I have no doubt it was his. But in good faith to readers, I cannot publish an official Robert Parker Wine Advocate review under those circumstances. This year, I purchased one bottle of his 2010 Barolo to taste. I discovered that there is a waiting list for his wines and people call the enoteca in La Morra from all over the world asking for Accomasso. I was allowed to buy just one bottle for this review. I must apologize to my colleague Luis Gutiérrez who asked me to pick up a few for him too. No such luck. Congratulations to Lorenzo Accomasso for achieving the coveted cult status in Barolo."
