Luigi’s vines are located in the Southern heart of Campania in an area of immense natural beauty and home to the ancient Greek site of Paestum. His wines are wonderfully pure expressions of the traditional local grapes, Fiano d’Avellino and Aglianico. Since his first vintage in 1996, Luigi has tended and improved the old family vineyards as the source of his exceptional fruit. Over the last few years, along with addition of new plantings adjacent to existing vineyards, Luigi has extensively upgraded and refurbished the winery giving him even better tools at his disposal to craft magnificent organic wines. This is the ‘other’ Campania, soils here are more commonly of the Cilento Flysch with sandstone, clay and soft marls giving a more mineral fruit expression than the rich energy of the Avellino volcanic-calcerous soils.
Luigi Maffini Kleos Aglianico 2018
13.5% abv
Moderately saturated ruby. Perfumed strawberry and red cherry on the knockout nose. Then impeccable acid/fruit/tannin balance, with a smooth mouthfeel and rich, dense but juicy red fruit and inky flavors. Finishes long and suave.
The Aglianico Kleos 2018 is made from grapes originating from both Luigi’s vineyards. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with aging in 2nd and 3rd passage barriques. Ruby red with violet reflections this has whiffs of cherry, currants and spices and a lightly dried grape character but remains spectacularly fresh.
