Luigi’s vines are located in the Southern heart of Campania in an area of immense natural beauty and home to the ancient Greek site of Paestum. His wines are wonderfully pure expressions of the traditional local grapes, Fiano d’Avellino and Aglianico. Since his first vintage in 1996, Luigi has tended and improved the old family vineyards as the source of his exceptional fruit. Over the last few years, along with addition of new plantings adjacent to existing vineyards, Luigi has extensively upgraded and refurbished the winery giving him even better tools at his disposal to craft magnificent organic wines. This is the ‘other’ Campania, soils here are more commonly of the Cilento Flysch with sandstone, clay and soft marls giving a more mineral fruit expression than the rich energy of the Avellino volcanic-calcerous soils.
Luigi Maffini Kratos 2019
13% abv
The Fiano d’Avellino Kratos 2017 is from grapes from both his vineyard parcels. One is overlooking the Gulf of Salerno (with some older vines 40+ years) and the other a higher site next to the Greek ruins at Paestum. The fruit is always of exceptional quality and fermented and aged in stainless steel. Full of exotic fruits, kiwis and apricots with an exceptional purity and tantalising aromas of raspberry flower. We have tasted back to 2002 and it is amazing how long these wines improve for, almost like a Campanian Riesling in structure, a real testament to how very good it is. Yet it is almost impossible not to drink it right now.

“Vivid straw. Peach and apricot aromas and flavors are rich and ripe and more in the style of the year than of Kratos (which is usually a fresh, vibrant white). Showcases very good balance thanks to lovely juicy cut that lifts the long, saline, balsamic finish.”
