Luigi’s vines are located in the Southern heart of Campania in an area of immense natural beauty and home to the ancient Greek site of Paestum. His wines are wonderfully pure expressions of the traditional local grapes, Fiano d’Avellino and Aglianico. Since his first vintage in 1996, Luigi has tended and improved the old family vineyards as the source of his exceptional fruit. Over the last few years, along with addition of new plantings adjacent to existing vineyards, Luigi has extensively upgraded and refurbished the winery giving him even better tools at his disposal to craft magnificent organic wines. This is the ‘other’ Campania, soils here are more commonly of the Cilento Flysch with sandstone, clay and soft marls giving a more mineral fruit expression than the rich energy of the Avellino volcanic-calcerous soils.
Luigi Maffini Siope 2016
14% abv
Full-bodied and rich in warmed black and red fruits with tendrils of herb infused Mediterranean air pulling the oak and fruit into a taut and delicious tension. This 100% Aglianico exhibits beautiful length, finesse and purity that belies its weight. From a selection of prodigious vines in Giungano. This specific parcel of Aglianico, although still young, with an average vine age of 12 years, exhibited such nuanced personality that Luigi was compelled to produce this new cuvee. Taking its name from the ancient Greek for silence it relects the peace that Luigi and family have nurtured in their vineyards. A meticulous selection, fermented and aged in new French oak, this is a prime example of the balance between amplitude and deftness of touch that Luigi and Raffaella have continually developed over the last 20+ vintages.
