The Marco family trace their history in the Priorat town of Porrera to the first Catalunyan census of 1497. After a hiatus instigated by the Phylloxera outbreak and time spent in Barcelona, the family returned to the tenure of their retained lands in 1898 and eventually the modern winery and Bodega were created a century later. Their four separate terraced vineyard plots range in altitude from 200 to 700m on the steep Mediterranean influenced hillsides of the region. The local licorella slate soils are farmed biodynamically and the wines are made in their state of the art gravity fed winery, built in 2001 into the hillside.
Marco Abella Clos Abella 2013
15.5% abv
Clos Abella is a true expression of the Porrera terroir. This wine utilizes the oldest and finest fruit to create a perfect blend of the Priorat’s two indigenous varieties, Carignan (70%) and Grenache (30%). This wine’s characteristic freshness comes from the fact that the grapes are grown in the highest vineyard in the Priorat terroir. The wine is aged 24 months in French oak barrels (225 and 300l 70% new) and matured in the bottle for at least two years before leaving the winery. This process gives Clos Abella its signature elegant balance and lingering finish.
Black cherry, mineral, oak spices and mountain herb incense. Spicy, chocolate flavors, ilky tannins, good balance and long, fresh finish with the power carried aloft by fresh acidity.
