Marques de Murrieta Tinto Reserva 2015

14% abv

“The red blend 2015 Rioja Reserva is 80% Tempranillo with 12% Graciano, 6% Mazuelo and 2% Garnacha, a little more Graciano and Mazuelo, something logical in ripe and warm years like 2015. It’s produced with grapes from a diversity of the 30 different plots within the estate, to represent the character of if. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in American oak barrels for 18 months. It’s spicy and somewhat balsamic, with some dusty tannins. It’s a ripe and powerful vintage that only suffers next to the 2016 I tasted next to it when there’s a jump in precision and finesse. This is by far the largest volume produced at Murrieta, with almost one million bottles.”
93 Points, Luis Guttierez, Wine Advocate

Established in 1852 by Luciano Francisco Ramón de Murrieta, this historic bodega was the first of the famous Rioja houses to be established and is still in existence today. As the original visionary and pioneer of the Rioja region, Luciano was made Marqués de Murrieta by Queen Isabel II. After the death of the Marqués in 1911, the bodega was taken over by the Olivares family and then in 1983 by D. Vicente Cebrián-Sagarriga, Count of Creixell. The new owner’s aim was to establish Bodegas Marqués de Murrieta among the best wineries in the world. His sudden death in 1996 left the vision only partly fulfilled.
The baton was passed onto his son Vicente Dalmau who proceeded to revolutionise the entire estate, investing significantly in the vineyards and winery to take the bodega into the 21st century. The emphasis is very much quality focused, with low yields in the vineyard and limited production in the winery. Truly hand-made, world-class wines from the oldest family owned estate in Rioja.

Marqués de Murrieta is the oldest family winery based in Rioja, Spain’s leading red wine region, concentrating exclusively on the production of premium Reserva and Gran Reserva wines since 1852. With a vision of innovation and respect for tradition, Marqués de Murrieta is rooted in strong, historical fundamentals that shape the vision and philosophy of this iconic Spanish brand.
The winery is settled near the southern tip of the Rioja Alta wine area, in the middle of the beautiful Ygay Estate, the biggest single estate in Rioja. Its 300 hectares are wholly owned, and all surrounding the estate, like a Chateau – unusual for the region.
Marqués de Murrieta is a long term project based on the clear business philosophy of a family company. Since 1996 the evolution of Marqués de Murrieta lies in the hands of V. Dalmau Cebrián-Sagarriga, Count of Creixell, whose father purchased the estate in 1983. The combination of V. Dalmau’s innovative ideas, respect for tradition and on-going investments guides a bright future for Marqués de Murrieta, one of Spain’s most historic wineries.

Behind the developments of Marques de Murrieta lies a clear vision: The pursuit of quality and excellence through tradition and innovation, by a family dedicated to introducing their fine wines all over the world, being nowadays present in 70 countries, meaning the export sales a 70% of the total.
