Michel Bouzereau et Fils. Meursault ‘Les Grands Charrons’ 2018

14% abv

The 2018 Meursault Les Grands Charrons, half matured in 500-liter barrels with 20% new oak, has an attractive bouquet of almond, quince and light pressed white flower aromas, plus a light buttery note in the background. The palate is taut and delineated on the entry, featuring lovely orange zest and tangerine notes, and becomes more lime-driven toward the finish, leaving noisettes on the aftertaste. Excellent. 2022 – 2032

Located just around the corner from Dominique Lafon in Meursault, Michel Bouzereau has been fashioning very sound, well-crafted and downright delicious wines in recent years. Of course, he was not spared the difficulties of the 2016 growing season.... "The second generation buds caught up with the ripeness during the summer, although frosted vines remained heterogenuous in terms of maturity,” he told me. “Puligny was a little touched by frost, Meursault Village and some premier crus such as Le Limozin, Les Porusots and Les Crotots, Bourgogne Blanc as well, but for me, quantities are close to normal. Cailleret was touched, down from three barrels to two. My reds were all hit by frost. So overall, the domaine is 35% less than average in 2016. We started picking the reds on 21 September, since July and August had been warm and dry after a wet May and June. September was also quite dry, but there was around 50 millimeters of rain between 13 and 19 September. I pulled up some vines that were affected by frost and due for replanting within five or six years. The 2016s were racked at the end of July, and I will bottle them between December and February." Overall, this was a slightly truncated but good set of wines from Bouzereau. Like many domaines, I found more brightness and tension with respect to his Puligny-Montrachets vis-à-vis Chassagne-Montrachet that were more affected by the frost damage, even though some vineyards there seemed to escape. His Les Champs Gain and Cailleret will be right at the top of my shopping list.
