Montessora Gavi di Gavi 2015
Donato Lanati, one of Italy’s best young consultants, began working with La Giustiniana at the beginning of 1998. His indelible stamp of quality has become increasingly evident in recent years. The changes wrought in the winery by Lanati are now being matched with the improvements being made in the vineyard, where better grapes are giving purer, richer and better balanced wines. The entire estate covers 110 hectares in the heart of the commune of Rovereto in Gavi, of which 40 are under vine. Two single vineyard wines are produced, both of which are unoaked so the character of each vineyard shines through.
Grapes are grown in the Montessora vineyard in Rovereto di Gavi, where they are Guyot trained at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare. Soils are mostly gravel with alluvial clay. The grapes are hand-harvested.
The summer of 2015 was one of the hottest and driest of the past 20 years. The harvest began in the first part of September, more or less two weeks earlier than usual. The weather during the harvest was very sunny throughout and rather hot for September. The harvested grapes were very ripe and healthy.
On arrival at the winery, the ripe grapes are gently pressed. The juice is cleared using flotation before being decanted into temperature controlled steel tanks. Fermentation takes place over a period two weeks at a controlled temperature of 16°C. After fermentation, the wine is stored at a temperature of 8°C until it is bottled the following spring.
Light straw in colour with a fresh, generous perfume with notes of flint and flowers. On the palate it is intense and concentrated with a lovely pure fruit character. Flavours of peach and lime follow through to a long, minerally finish.
