Morrison Old Perth Blended Malt
Perth is a city with an unrivalled heritage of whisky blending. World-famous blends originated here: Bell’s, The Famous Grouse and Dewar’s White Label are all Perth blends. Old Perth Scotch sat comfortably among esteemed company. With the incorporation of Peter Thomson Ltd. into Haddows, Old Perth was taken out of production, meanwhile the other Perth blends were gradually appropriated by multi-national drinks corporations and they became removed from their town of origin. Perth, once a centre of great whisky blending repute, no longer had a whisky to its name. It is, therefore, befitting that Old Perth was resurrected in 2013 and that Morrison and Mackay Whisky Merchants, the company behind this renaissance is based in Perth.
What makes Old Perth blended malt of a superior quality to a typical “blended scotch whisky” is the use of only malt Whiskies in the blend. A typical blended scotch will have on average 70% of the blend as grain whisky and only 30% malt whisky. Old Perth is 100% malt whisky and is now on its 5th release but the core whisky has always remained the same, Aultmore 2009 matured in first fill bourbon casks. The same batch of casks has been used for each of the 5 releases so the core whisky in the number 5 release is older therefore giving a slightly more grown up, single malt like character. However, although the recipe differs very slightly from batch to batch, the core style remains the same. A rich flavoured and malty dram revealing banoffe pie, buttery caramel and runny honey balanced elegantly with a mature oakiness. A finish of soft oak and vanilla candy merges with a lingering and warming spice. Not only does it contain several malts including Aultmore but there are wee lashings of Tomatin, Mortlach, and Ben Nevis. A cracking whisky.
