Nals-Margreid (Nalles-Magrè in Italian) work with 138 growers who farm 170 hectares in 14 different areas. The vineyards are found stretching from the town of Nals, between Merano and Bolzano in the regions' North, to Margreid in the sunny South. The fruit provided by these growers (each with an average of 1 hectare) provides winemaker Harald Schraffl with the product from 14 of the most renowned areas in the Sudtirol. Elevations vary between 650 and 3000 feet and all benefit from the triple-whammy that the zone provides for quality viticulture: 300 days of sunshine, the protection of the Alps to the North combined with the warming influence of Mediterranean and big temperature swings between day and night.
Nals Margreid Pinot Grigio Cru Punggl 2020
Bright golden yellow. Complex aromas of peach and tropical fruit complemented by sweet spices and wet minerals. Rich, dense and juicy, with spicy orchard fruit flavors and a long creamy finish. Large-scaled and powerful but this knockout Pinot Grigio actually tastes graceful and balanced. Made from 80-year-old pergola-trained vines in Magrè (Margreid, in German) planted on deep grey clay soil. Punggl means “small hill”. About 2900 cases made a year.
“Subtle aromas of dried mango and papaya follow through to a full body with a dense, layered mouth feel of ripe fruit. Yet, it remains intense and flavorful at the end of the palate with flint and fennel to the tropical fruit. Special pinot grigio. Drink now”
93 Points, James Suckling
The grapes from this vineyard are small compact and intense berries that are fermented in steel and then aged in both steel tanks and old oak vats.
