Nikka's history starts with the company's founder, Masataka Taketsuru, moving to Scotland in 1918 to study chemistry at Glasgow University and apprentice at three Scottish distilleries in order to learn the secrets of Scotch whisky production. On returning to Japan he was employed to set up the Yamazak distllery. After10 years at Yamazaki Taketsuru decided to go out on his own.

Mainly composed of Yoichi distillery malt, Black is characterized by powerful peat, rich taste and firm flavour.
