Perrin & Fils Gigondas La Gille 2016
Gigondas is a little village nestled high in the hills of the southern Rhône, and gives its name to one of the region’s best known reds. As Jancis Robinson MW notes, Gigondas offers “excellent value – the best wines are remarkably similar to Châteauneuf du Pape”. La Gille is from the Perrin family, owners of Château de Beaucastel, the flagship estate of the southern Rhône that dates back to 1549. A believer in biodynamic viticulture, Marc Perrin selected the grapes from a small plot of 45 year old vines located mid-slope in Gigondas, once home to a 12th century monastery. Here they ripen two weeks later than in Châteauneuf, adding to the finesse of this well balanced red. This is a great food wine – perfect with roast beef, lamb or venison.
