The artisanal, family-owned winery Pusole is located on the eastern shore of central Sardinia, in the Ogliastra region which offers a varied terrain, going from the beautiful seaside to mountains of over 1100 metres. Here, for four generations, the Pusole family has cultivated its land, producing wine, corn and olive oil, in addition to breeding a local species of semi-wild pigs called “razza sarda”. Today the family business is run by siblings Loredana, Lorenzo and Roberto. In the cellar Pusole follows a production philosophy which aims at preserving the true character of the wines, shaped by the soil and the vintage. Only indigenous yeasts are used for the fermentation, and temperatures are controlled exclusively by airing the must. After hand harvesting, the wine undergoes non-temperature controlled natural fermentation and remains unfiltered.
Pusole Sa Scala Cannonau di Sardegna 2014
Intense, ample aromas of Mediterrenean scrubs, bramble fruits, mulberry and morello cherries intertwined with scents of cumin and Indian spices. The taste is full-bodied and impressive, with layers of fruit, tar, roses and mineral sensations. The finish is remarkably long and characterised by hints of hazelnut cream.
Produced with the best grapes selected from the vineyard “Sa Scala”, property of Pusole winery. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks with the use of indigenous yeasts and no artificial temperature control. Daily pushing down of the cap.18 months in small oak casks. Pusole uses no new oak for ageing. As Cannonau is a rather vigorous grape variety in terms of fruit production, Pusole performs a thinning out of the grapes in pre-summer, leave approximately 1-1.5 kilos of grapes per plant.
The vineyard “Sa Scala” which gives name to the top wine of Pusole, extends over an area of 2 hectares and is planted with 10.000 Cannonau vines, cordon trained, of the winery’s own mass selection. The soil here varies from clay-rich to sandy and rich in stones, offering interesting aromatic diversity and flavour profile of the individual microterroirs.
The wine is not filtered.
