Never one to rest on her laurels, Sophia Bergqvist has invested significantly over the last few years at La Rosa with the construction of a new winery. New granite lagares, fermentation tanks and an automatic basket press have been purchased, a carefully thought out tasting room overlooking the Douro River has been constructed, an extensive area for entertaining has been created, as well as a number of apartments and guest rooms built to develop the tourism side of the business. You can’t help but be impressed with the scale of this project and admire Sophia Bergqvist’s vision for this family Quinta, whilst she has maintained the integrity of the old building and the charm of a family estate in the Douro.

Quinta de la Rosa is a beautiful Quinta in the Cima Corgo subregion of Douro. The Berqvist family bought the property in 1906 as a christinening for Sophia’s grandmother, Claire. They also owned the Feueheerd Shipping Company but alas that was sold in 1930. The estate remained largely dormant in terms of wine production for almost 50 years. It was not until 1988 that the modern incarnation of Quinta de la Rosa emerged… This is when Sophia and her late father Tim decided to make wines and Port under the name of the estate. The wines were consistently good, but not GREAT. It wasn’t until 2002 when the young winemaker Jorge Moreira joined the team that the wines became something truly special.
